I've just finished reading a book/catalogue about the hand painted wallpaper company 'Paul Montogomery Studio' and their work is amazing! Seeing their detailed hand painted Chinoiserie, European Panoramics, Decorative Panneaux designs ... it just motivates me to be as good them and makes me all the more determined to understand the process of hand painted wallpaper.


From reading their book and having a look at their website (click here for website) it seems to me that if you want a custom made hand painted wallpaper in your house it does take a bit of time, and yup a lot of money - the sample is at least $170, but then I guess you do have a beautiful piece of Art adorning your walls which is a small price to pay.

First of all you choose a design from their vast collection:

• Chinoiserie Collection - Classical Chinese/Asian themes i.e landscapes, floral, nature scenes

• Antiquity Collection - Historical/allegory Asian themes dating back to 1200-1900BC painted in an antique style

• European Collection - Traditional 18th century European themes, hand painted by the company replicating the old European block printing method to the same standard

• Salon Collection - A repetitive and open pattern more floral the panoramic

• Decorative Panneaux - Hand Painted Panels custom measured painted in French/Italian Salon style

• Impervim Collection - Classic forms with a modern twist (seems much more the commercial, i.e for business and hotels)

Secondly you choose your paper (for Chinoiserie, Antiquity and Salon Collection):

• Plain Silks
• Saturated Silks
• Metal and Peal painted Silks
• Metal Leaf Papers
• Antiqued Ground Papers 
• Fang Kuai Pieced Papers (original way of making wallpaper by joining several pieces of small paper together showing the overlap in lines of the hand pieces)

Thirdly you select your size:

• They come in standard sizes, but are not stocked so can easily be adjust to meet your room needs. All panels are 91cm wide and are available in the standard heights 6",8",10" and 12"

Once you have sent of for your sample and then placed your order, your design should arrive in a matter of weeks. For standard design the length is about 8-10 weeks but custom designs can take up to 15 weeks.

Their prices aren't cheap, but for the quality you are getting they're not even questionable. The company does hand painted murals which have a starting price of $5000
