A very BRIEF history of Murals



Murals are probably the oldest form of art dating back thousands of years, to the late stone ages and there are many surving murals from the Egyptian ear (around 3150BC) and is a piece of art painted directly onto a wall/ceiling.



Historically murals were applied to walls in a style called 'fresco' in which water based paint is applied to wet plaster - it dries lighter colour but it sealed to the wall and is less likely to peel. Most frescos during the Renaissance mainly depicted religious or mythological sub The world most famous mural is probably in Michelangelo's Sistene Chapel completed between 1508 -1512.
In modern times murals can be used to voice political expression such as the Mexican Mural movement during the early 20th century. The famous mexican muralist, Diego Rivera painted a series of murals after the countries revolution celebrating the working classes background and heritage.


Today murals range in a variety of different styles, it can be found in interiors, on the walls of our street and in advertising.
